Windows Server 2008 Core
Configuring Windows Server 2008 Core
Windows Server 2008 Core and Hyper-V Server 2008 install without a user interface. Which is basicaly a scaled back installation version of Windows Server 2008 where no shell of its own is installed. Allowing greater security for server role systems. For those of you who have installed and configured a Windows Core system you are probably aware of some of the headaches in regards to the scripts (command line) needed to configure certain roles or features. Awhile back you might remember a core configurator tool put together by Guy Teverovsky, providing a user interface for server core platforms, which cut configuration time into minutes.
A new configuration utility has been developed with the same emphasis by Portlock called Portlock SMART Suite for Windows. This has some great configuration tools which I have listed below.
Configure display resolution
Clock and time zone configuration
Remote desktop configuration
Firewall Configuration
Windows Updates – No IE necessary
Configure IP address, gateway, subnet mask, DNS
Copy Files/Directories
Map a drive
Perform Windows Repair
Web Browser
Email Client
Screen saver configuration
Enable/Disable drivers and services
Manually load/install drivers
Windows Registry Editor
Command prompt
Configure dual boot systems
Configure bootable USB devices
Configure Language
No installation necessary
Boot bare-metal systems
WMI Management
Configure permission and security settings
Configure permission and security settings
After playing with server core platform for a good part of the last couple months I have really begun to enjoy using these utilities. Server Core platforms are sure to become more and more popular.
